Left On Purpose
USA, 95 min., Feature Documentary
What if you are shooting a documentary about an aging?but still funny?'60s radical and he announces that, at the end of the film, he will kill himself as his ?final political act?? In the 1960s, Mayer Vishner, along with Abbie Hoffman and Jerry Rubin, began the Youth International Party (The Yippies), who used humor and sarcasm as tools against the Vietnam War. But why have some of them committed suicide? What begins with director Justin Schein?s simple curiosity about Mayer?s intellect, values and the rebellious legacy of his counter-cultural generation turns into a dark yet profoundly humorous journey through what Mayer references as his ?existential project.?
